Presented are formal addresses and discussion group reports from a teacher in-service workshop held in Donaueschingen, Western Germany, in September, 1978 to acquaint European secondary school teachers with the Council of Europe's educational program. Specific objectives of the workshop were to discuss approaches to teaching about Europe in language arts and social studies programs in secondary schools and to investigate how to teach about political and economic cooperation in Europe since 1945. Participants included 26 teachers and teacher educators from Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Western Germany, Luxembourg, Norway, and the United Kingdom as well as two teachers from Canadian schools in Western Germany. Introductory statements stressed the desirability of a continuous program of in-service courses. Other speeches focused on treatments of European integration in various school systems, reasons to inculcate students with an awareness of European problems, and suggestions for teaching about European culture. Working group sessions discussed curriculum development, resources, approaches, and methods for various secondary grade levels. Recommendations for future workshops were that the sessions be informal, offer more opportunities for discussion by participants, and emphasize developing interdisciplinary approaches to teaching about Europe.
