Eight major fields (computer specialists, engineers, mathematical specialists, life scientists, physical scientists, environmental scientists, psychologists, and social scientists) are used to categorize 17 detailed fields of science or engineering. The report provides highlights of findings, a summary of results, a discussion of the sample and statistical considerations, the questionnaire used, and a section on definitions and explanations. Data for the document were obtained from the 1976 National Survey of Natural and Social Scientists and Engineers sponsored by the National Science Foundation and conducted by the Bureau of the Census.
