A Competency-Based Self-Paced Astronomy Course for Liberal Arts Students. Final Report.

This publication is the final report of the activities performed in the development of an introductory astronomy course operated in a competency based mode. The objective was for the course to be completely opposite from one which emphasizes memorization of factual knowledge. Instead, the student was to be involved in activities where he or she would have to solve problems in a fashion analogous to that of a working scientist. The report discusses the structure of the new course, the bookkeeping system and procedure for evaluation. The report also includes results of evaluation of student populations, relative merits of the new course versus the old, student attitudes, and costs of operating the new course. (Author/GA)
