ARL Annual Salary Survey, 1977-1978.
Frankie, Suzanne, Comp.
This survey includes tabulations of median and beginning professional salaries for the year for budgeted positions in all Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member libraries and supplementary tables listing average salaries for filled positions in ARL's academic libraries, displayed by position, sex, minority group membership, and geographic location, size, and type of institution. Year end figures show a 28 percent increase in purchasing power during the year, indicating that librarians did little more than break even. Although there are almost twice as many women as men employed by ARL member libraries in professional positions, the imbalances in the distribution of staff by sex and position favor men at top administrative levels and women as department heads. Average salaries for men are higher than for women in the majority of categories, including minority librarians. Public institutions pay higher salaries than private institutions and, with a few exceptions, bigger libraries pay more. Generally, librarians in the Pacific region earn most, while those in the East South Central region earn least. Footnotes are included. (CWM)
