Professional Development Through Growth Contracts Handbook.
Heie, Harold; And Others
The program of faculty development by growth contracting at Gordon College, Massachusetts, is described and evaluated, and a faculty development manual is presented. Under the growth contracting program, each participating faculty member writes a faculty profile that contains an assessment of strengths and weaknesses, a statement of current faculty roles, an assessment of effectiveness in carrying out these roles, and a statement of long-range professional and personal goals, typically for a period of from three to five years. The profile forms the basis for a series of yearly individual development plans (growth contracts) intended to cumulatively implement one's long-range goals. Principles for faculty growth contracting and questions and problems that have arisen are discussed. Suggestions are offered for institutions which are contemplating growth contracting as a means for faculty development. A summary of results of an evaluation of the program and a discussion of possible factors contributing to positive results are presented. The faculty development manual defines responsibilities of personnel and departments and outlines implementation procedures. Appendices include a sample faculty profile, annual plan, budget form, ledger sheet, evaluation form, and suggested guidelines for advisory committees. (SW)
