The State of the Art of Reading in Virginia.
Virginia State Dept. of Education, Richmond.
Prepared as part of a comprehensive study of reading in Virginia, this report contains the findings of 18 research studies. After a discussion of the findings, several recommendations are presented. Among these recommendations are: students in English as a second language programs should be placed with peer groups rather than according to English reading achievement level, curricula should be expanded to include psychomotor objectives, class sizes should be reduced, and the number of secondary schools offering reading instruction should be increased. The report concludes that reading continues to be an area of major concern in Virginia schools. (Abstracts of the 18 research studies and a table of data are appended.) (FL)
