The Effects of Industrial Arts Publishing Activity Centers on Reading Achievement Scores.
New York State Education Dept., Albany. Bureau of Occupational Education Research.; New York State Education Dept., Albany. Bureau of Industrial Arts Education.
To determine whether attendance at and time spent in industrial arts publishing activity centers effect gains in reading achievement, a study covering three years and involving more than 1,500 students in six elementary schools in New York City was undertaken. Data collected for each student included reading achievement test scores, number of minutes spent and times in attendance at the centers each year, ethnic group, sex, grade level, and mobility. Analysis of the data showed that publishing activity center programs had no statistically significant effect on reading achievement during their first year of operation, but that exposure to the centers had a positive effect on reading achievement scores across grade levels and schools during the second year of program operation and thereafter. Individual student test score gains were directly proportional to the hours spent in the centers. (Six appendixes contain descriptions of data collected, tables showing means and standard deviations of reading achievement scores, tables of the number of times and minutes of attendance at the centers, a description and the results of the multiple linear regression analysis procedure used, copies of the data collection instruments, and the interview schedule used by the paraprofessionals who directed the programs.)
