This drug information package contains factual materials for the teacher to use with primary and intermediate students. But the total program emphasizes using the factual materials in conjunction with having students learn more about themselves, their values, and how to make decisions. The activities are geared toward several essential areas of drug prevention education: making the child understand what constitutes a drug and how drug abuse is defined; classifying household medicines; and understanding the different effects of major drugs. Charts on different drugs, their uses and effects, are provided for the teacher. Several activities are designed to help the student understand the influence that advertising and the media have on public drug consumption. The overall design of the activities, however, is to promote the proper use of drugs by the students, and to help them consider for themselves the propriety of using or abusing drugs. (PK)
