Kleine, Richard E.; Hamme, Randall
The result of a curriculum development project known as Project Open, this curriculum guide offers an elective course on transportation systems for ninth graders who are participating in the Career Exploration in Technology (CEIT) program and who have completed the eighth-grade course on manufacturing systems. The course, which spans two semesters, includes the following units: (1) an introduction, (2) history of land transportation, (3) energy, (4) transporting people, (5) freight transportation, (6) future trends in land transportation, (7) water transportation, (8) air transportation, (9) space transportation, and (10) transportation systems. Each unit gives an overview of its topic and an objectives statement, followed by a detailed content outline, suggested time span, relevant resources, and a list of activities supportive to the content. The types of activities vary from class discussions, films, and demonstrations, to student design and construction of vehicles and their components. Some units also contain pre- and posttests. Elective units are also included on the metric system and alternative sources of energy. A film list is provided at the end, as well as the names and addresses of supplier of free and inexpensive materials to be used in the course. (For the final report of the project that developed this guide, see CE 018 781.) (ELG)
