Film as Revolutionary Weapon: A Pedagogical Analysis. Latin American Studies Program, Film Series No. 3.

This paper describes a university course designed to examine the use of film as a revolutionary medium in Latin American countries. Objectives of the course were to illustrate the complexity of studying a film genre, develop an analytical framework for comparing revolutionary films, and encourage students to reach their own conclusions about the nature and effectiveness of revolutionary film. Initial class sessions focused on the basic tools of film analysis, on the social, economic, and militaristic characteristics of Latin American countries, and on revolutionary film in general. After these introductory sessions, students screened one film a week, wrote film analyses, and attended discussions. Short lectures preceded the screenings and outside readings were assigned. The final examination required students to develop an individual definition of revolutionary film, evaluate the six films seen in the course on the basis of their definition, and evaluate the use of film as a source for teaching. Student reaction to the course was positive; most felt that film facilitated the teaching of history and placed more responsibility on the students in their role as critics. The six documentary and feature films shown in the course were "Hour of the Furnaces" (Argentina, 1968), "Mexico: The Frozen Revolution" (Mexico, 1970), "Memories of Underdevelopment" (Cuba, 1968), "The Principal Enemy" (Peru, 1974), "The Promised Land" (Chile, 1973), and "The Guns" (Brazil, 1963).
