Demographic, Social, and Economic Profile of States: Spring 1976. Current Population Reports, Series P-20, No. 334.
Norton, Arthur J., Ed.
This report presents statistics for the total United States, regions, divisions, and each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia based upon the 1976 Survey of Income and Education (SIE). The data provide a profile of the social and economic characteristics of the individual states. There are two sections of text: Demographic and Social Characteristics, and Economic Characteristics. The first section explains what the data reveal about population, demography, households, families, fertility, educational attainment, mobility, black population, and persons of Spanish origin. For example, the SIE data show that over the period 1970-76, the proportion of the U.S. population 18 years old and over with at least a high school education rose from 56% to 67%. Section two interprets economic data in categories of income, poverty, work disability, employment status, industry, occupations of women, and occupations of ethnic groups. For example, the number of persons below the poverty level in the United States decreased from 27.1 million in 1970 to 24 million in 1976. This reduction in poverty was not uniformly shared by all the states, however. Both sections are supported by extensive tables of data which comprise the bulk of the report. Appendices include a glossary of terms, sample SIE questionnaire forms, and a discussion of source and reliability of the data. (AV)
