The curriculum planning guide was developed to assist teachers (K-12) in developing comprehensive social studies education programs, identifying appropriate goals, and in evaluating and reporting student progress. This booklet's content is presented in nine sections. The first, in introduction for teachers, explains how to use the guide and identifies models for use in various kinds of planning situations. Section II provides information on assessing current programs. Section III reviews the process of developing a rationale for a social studies program. Section IV explains how to identify, clarify, and seek agreement on the nature of social studies and how to determine the scope of the program. Section V provides information on selecting goals and objectives and refers readers to a list of sources of learning objectives in the appendix. Sections VI and VII focus on choosing content and on identifying and selecting curriculum materials. Section VIII reports on evaluation and testing procedures. The final section explains how to install and maintain a social studies program and suggests how to encourage community involvement. Learning activities, handouts, and additional resources are included in each section. (DB)
