Educational Research Internship: Women and Minority Junior Faculty. A Feasibility Study.

A study was conducted to assess the feasibility of operating an internship program to increase the number of talented women and minority educational researchers and to encourage the pursuit of fresh educational research related to their special concerns. The study focused on women and minority junior faculty (assistant professors, lecturers, and instructors) at four-year colleges and universities in the Mid-Atlantic region (Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania). Study objectives were to locate women and minority faculty in the appropriate fields (education and social sciences); identify their training needs and interests; contact senior researchers interested in working with the program; identify and evaluate existing internship programs; and develop an internship training model for women and minority junior faculty. The needs assessment also provided data on junior faculty training and experience and desired training, constraints on participation, and personal suggestions for a model program. The Internship Identification Survey catalogued important program characteristics as well as shortcomings and difficulties in existing internship programs. Senior researchers committed to working with junior faculty and to assisting in their advancement provided valuable comments and commitment to participate in an internship program like the model program. A literature review and procedures and results of the study surveys are included. (SW)
