Communication Policy and Planning: Alternative Perspectives.

This syllabus describes a communication course taught at the University of Hawaii. The purposes of the course are: to develop an awareness of alternative perspectives, to examine the ways in which people express themselves through the use of technology, to explore a wide range of cross-cultural research questions in which the problems of communications systems and the individual and social needs of communication can be more fully understood, to consider issues involved in the formulation of a communication ethic, to examine the influence of the new communications technologies on traditional media, to investigate concepts of the free flow of information, and to examine critically samples of communications planning for Canada, Australia, and Hawaii, discussing the feasibility of the stated objectives of each.
