Putting Social Indicators to Work: An Annotated Bibliography.
California State Office of Planning and Research, Sacramento.
This bibliography identifies 134 resources about the use of social indicators in national, state, county, and city profiles. Most of the reports describe projects which (1) used a profile approach (presented a comprehensive view of an area by drawing together information on housing, crime, education, income, and employment), (2) had a policy focus (were concerned with needs and conditions rather than with numbers of people served by various programs), or (3) used social and economic indicators in a broadly defined sense (limited data to key items of information which are indicative of conditions in an area). The first two sections present citations of projects undertaken at national and state levels. Sections three and four present citations of local projects within California and in other states. Section five identifies organizations involved in research on the application of social indicators. An index gives charts showing the following characteristics of the reports in the bibliography: level of aggregation of the data, time period covered, type of analysis, type of data used, and type of data display.
