The swimming instruction guide presents teaching techniques and skill progressions for developmentally disabled individuals and includes program development and administrative guidelines. Part 1 discusses swimming and developmentally disabled children, program planning and preparation elements (including pool, scheduling, staff, parents, transportation, orientation, flotation devices), and answers frequently asked questions. Part 2 describes 18 swimming activities, including adjustment to water, breath control, basic kicking and armstroke skills, jumping, floating, turning over, changing direction, and personal safety. The eight appendixes include a swimming release form, information sheet, progress chart, teaching suggestions for volunteers, bath-time activities for children, and a bibliography and index. (BD)
