The Roles and Responsibilities of Instructional Supervisors. A Report.
Sturges, A. W.; And Others
This publication is the product of a working group assigned the responsibility of examining the role and responsibilities of instructional supervisors. In addition to reviewing the 1977 report of another working group, the members of this group examined existing certification and preparatory programs for instructional supervisors; conducted rather lengthy telephone interviews with the executive directors of major professional organizations that work with, prepare, or employ instructional supervisors; conducted telephone interviews with members of those organizations; and made an analysis of published information concerned with the preparation, roles, and responsibilities of instructional supervisors. Members of the group conclude this report with recommendations based on their findings. The findings indicate that under existing conditions instructional supervisors must play a dual role and suggest that there are really two groups of instructional supervisors: administrative and consultative. Responsibilities for the two positions are different and different preparatory and experience programs are recommended. (Author/IRT)
