This essay outlines the skills and qualities that an alternative, open, elementary school teacher should possess. These criteria are based on the PACER model of 30 students, age 4 to 12, learning in an ungraded, unstructured environment. (The PACER model adheres to the idea that all experiences and all learning situations are of equal importance.) Some of the skills and characteristics emphasized here are: ability to continually change and adapt to the environment; love of children; ability to counsel students; pleasure in physical activities; ability to teach basic academics; ability to construct and play games; the penchant to work well with other adults; possession of an even temper and ego; adequate knowledge of psychology and learning theories; and an ability to make creative decisions.
