Partnership in Spirit and in Fact: A Description of the Parma Teacher Education Project.
MacNaughton, Robert H.
A field experience cooperative education program between Cleveland State University and a local public school is described. The program consisted of three major segments: the Junior Participators Program, the Parma Teacher Education Center North, and the Curriculum and Methods Program. The first program provided supervised work with children during the junior year of a student's professional coursework. The teacher center segment sought to promote improvement of both preservice and inservice teachers through an interactive process. The curriculum and methods program was guided by two principles: the preparation of teachers should be a team effort involving academic specialists, experts in instructional methodology, and classroom teachers in the field; and performance standards for the methods students should be established and a systematic process established to enable the student to attain them. This last segment was evaluated by both students and the preservice and inservice teachers involved. Results showed that a successful program had been established both in terms of teachers using teaching strategies and resources, and in planning, evaluating, and achieving learning objectives. (DS)
