Major concepts and generalizations related to economics and American government are presented. The syllabus is intended for 12th grade social studies teachers. Using the guide, teachers develop and implement strategies which will help students understand more advanced economic and political concepts. Introductory sections provide an overview of economic and political science concepts, definition of vocabulary terms, and information on how to use the syllabus. Economics topics discussed are economic understandings, the market system, government role, economic growth, the United States economy, and comparative economic systems. Topics related to American government role and structure include the nature of government, how to identify and discuss issues, decision making, policy formation, and reevaluation of the power structure. For each topic, information is presented on an overview, discussion questions, generalizations, relevant persons and events, and background information. Activities involve students in deriving generalizations from major topics, discussing concepts and generalizations in class, research projects, identifying trends, analyzing variables, defining terms, and simulating decision-making processes.
