UPSTEP: An Integrated Approach to the Science Preparation of Prospective Elementary School Teachers.

This publication presents a six-year project (1972-78) funded by the National Science Foundation under the Undergraduate Pre-service Teacher Education Program (UPSTEP). The first three years of the project (Phase I) were concerned with a longitudinal study of a pilot group of prospective elementary teachers as they encountered science content and science teaching methodology coupled with early and continued field teaching experiences. The last three years of the project (Phase II) were concerned with the continued implementation and dissemination of the goals of the project. This document consists of two sections. The first section is concerned with Phase I. The objectives, description, and evaluation of the program are presented. Exemplar UPSTEP project units in biology and physics are also presented. The second section is concerned with Phase II. A description of the testing instruments and inquiry evaluations are presented. Several appendices including the project instruments are also included.
