The Status of Women in Mathematics.
Hewitt, Gloria C.
Changes in the role of women mathematicians during the 1970's are recounted. Positive changes include: (1) history books being written which include accounts of women mathematicians, (2) more women in positions of authority in mathematical professional organizations, and (3) an increase in percent of degrees in mathematics earned by women. Areas with less than satisfactory change include: (1) employment of women mathematicians, and (2) minority women with doctorate degrees in mathematics. Other problems discussed include: (1) sexual bias in textbooks, and (2) attitudes of teachers and peer groups. (MP)
