Activities for school age day care programs are presented in detail in this guide for children, parents, and day care staff. The guide consists of 14 illustrated booklets that provide activity instructions and some background information. Topics are: (1) functions of school age day care; (2) quiet and active games and materials; (3) toys and play props to make; (4) ways to develop the child's physical (indoor and outdoor) environment; (5) gymnastic exercises to be used to teach physical skills; (6) recipes and food activities which teach the child nutrition, good eating habits, and academic skills; (7) science and nature projects which informs the child about trees, insects, and other subjects; (8) community resources for children; (9) arts and crafts activities in such areas as crafts from other cultures, decorations, nature projects, and woodwork; (10) music activities, including appreciation exercises, singing, dancing, composing, and learning about musical instruments and equipment; (11) communication and creative dramatic activities; (12) projects that focus on special interests of the older child (ages 10 through 12); (13) classroom management and day care program planning; and (14) business and program forms and recordkeeping.
