Self Concept Development and the Teacher-Child Relationship. Learning Package 4.
Gartrell, Dan
This instructional booklet is part of Learning Package #4 on the teacher's role in children's self concept development used in conjunction with the Child Development Training Program at Bemidji, Minnesota. The booklet is divided into four chapters which discuss: (1) the importance of the teacher-child relationship in relation to self-fulfilling prophecy, the child's self concept, and the uniqueness of each child; (2) the effects of two different teachers and their personal qualities and attitudes on the development of the same child; (3) how to develop a healthy, helping teacher-child relationship by observing the child, by interacting with other teachers and the family of the child, and by talking and listening to the child; and (4) how to meet the basic needs of the child in preschool activities, using some teaching practices that facilitate the child's personal and social development. Each chapter includes two or more written activities. Also included are a list of suggested readings and a package evaluation form. (The entire Learning Package #4 consists of this instructional booklet and readings from three other books: "Observing and Recording the Behavior of Young Children,""Teacher and Child," and "Self Concept and School Achievement.")
