Enhancing Teaching in a Residential College. Final Report.
Smith, Wendell I.
A project at Bucknell University is described that was designed to: evaluate faculty teaching, conduct faculty seminars and workshops, disseminate sources of information to faculty, provide funds for the support of instructional improvement projects, develop a means of relating the quality of teaching and scholarship to a system of financial and nonfinancial incentives, and improve the sabbatical leave and related programs. The project is discussed under three general headings: changes having to do with the faculty and its teaching directly; changes having to do with new curricular projects; and changes having to do with institutional governance and the faculty. To implement the faculty's policies regarding teaching, each department prepared a statement of criteria for teaching, scholarship, and related professional services for judging tenured and non-tenured faculty and for conducting annual reviews of faculty members. Five projects are summarized that promoted professional development and course development. Program activities are evaluated, and the following materials are appended: faculty activities report, perceptions of a merit salary system, example of a departmental profile and of a faculty profile, memorandum on faculty development, and a sample of a freshman survey.
