Public School Enrollment and Staff. New York State 1977-78.

This report presents data on enrollment, staff, and schools for all public school districts and Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) in New York State. The data summaries were obtained from the annual survey of school districts conducted by the Information Center on Education in the fall of 1977. General data are presented for 1975-77, and more detailed data are included for 1977-78 enrollment and staff by grade level for the state, regions, counties, and districts. The number of operating school districts remained constant at 737, while the number of BOCES decreased by 1 to a total of 44. The number of public schools has been decreasing in the past three years. In 1977-78 there were 33 fewer schools operating as compared to the previous year, with the greatest decrease occurring in the elementary school category. The number of pupils enrolled in the public schools and BOCES of the state declined by 116,702 from the fall of 1976 to the fall of 1977. The total number of professional staff members employed by public school districts in fall 1977 was 203,138, of which 175,879 were classroom teachers. The total number of paraprofessional and support staff in 1977 was 136,220. (Author/JM)
