A Model for Police Assistance to Rape Victims.
Merchant, Jerrold J.
Noting that an increasing number of rape victims who seek alternatives to police procedures do so because of the insensitive behavior of the investigating police officer, this paper provides a model of interpersonal communication skills that will enable police officers to better relate to and support the victims of rape. The areas covered in the model include officer beliefs and attitudes, verbal first aid techniques, methods of dealing with verbal abuse from the victim, how to read such nonverbal cues as eye contact and touch, terms to avoid with the victim, and being "yes, confirmational." The stated purpose of this behavior model is to help a rape victim see herself as "ok" and to help officers gain the victim's confidence so that the crime may be solved. (FL)
