Developed in West Virginia as part of a statewide effort to improve reading achievement through a competency based staff development program, this inservice instructional packet on reading readiness is one of five designed to present classroom teachers with the essential competencies and learner outcomes involved in developmental reading. The materials in this packet offer participating teachers knowledge of reading readiness skills, practice in synthesizing formal and informal data for beginning readiness skills at the classroom level, and assistance in developing a personalized plan for beginning readiness instruction which includes instructional decisions and preassessment, instructional strategies, and record keeping and evaluation. The packet also contains guidelines for conducting the inservice program; the gestalt, rationale, objectives, and schedule for the program; a self-evaluation record; transparencies on readiness; and an evaluation record for the inservice program.
