A group of 590 female M.D.'s, Ph.D.'s, lawyers, and artists between ages 30 and 40 completed a mailed questionnaire including an anxiety scale (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory), a sex role questionnaire (Personal Attributes Questionnaire), a measure of ego development (Inventory of Psychosocial Development), and an Attitudes Toward Women Scale along with a demographic information sheet. The major finding was that "generativity", the style of ego maturity associated with adulthood accordinq to Erikson (1950), can be achieved by those who are not biologically "generative" or procreative. This result calls into question Erikson's emphasis on parenthood as a necessary condition for continued development, and offers counterevidence for the stereotype that childless individuals are immature and psychologically unhealthy.
