This United States Employment Service's Occupational and Career Information Series publication on the trucking industry is designed to provide an occupationally oriented overview of the field for employment and career counselors, as well as students and other interested readers. The following information is included: a brief history of the trucking industry; descriptions of types of carriers; general discussions of educational and training requirements and career development opportunities within the trucking industry; a list of addresses of state trucking associations which are affiliated with the American Trucking Association, Inc.; a photographic tour of activities in a typical common carrier terminal; glossaries of "trucking jargon" and standard trucking terminology; and a bibliography of materials on recent employment developments and outlook for the occupations in this industry. A major portion of this document contains detailed job descriptions of eighteen different occupations within the trucking industry. Each job description includes a brief definition of the occupation; a discussion of education, training, and experience requirements; and a summary of worker traits characteristic of that occupation.
