An idealized model for the selection of faculty is presented in three phases. The first of these, pre-recruitment, consists of four steps: determining needs for positions to accomplish institutional aims; analysis of student, community, administrative, and colleague characteristics, and of job qualifications; preparation of the selection package; and affirmative action evaluation and final reviews. The recruitment phase involves engaging in efforts which will produce a high quality and diverse set of applicants from all relevant populations. The third phase is applicant and candidate evaluation; the steps which comprise this phase are candidate screening, admission to candidacy, examination of candidates' references and final checks, evaluations of the candidates, final reviews and consultations, and invitation to faculty membership or resubmission of position announcement.
