The Elementary School Curriculum: An Overview. Revised Edition.
New York State Education Dept., Albany. Bureau of General Education Curriculum Development.
This overview was designed to illustrate how elementary education is a total program based on the natural growth and development of children. Ten humanistic goals are identified as of fundamental importance for a fully educated person, and the responsibilities of the school in achieving these goals are discussed. Three educational objectives are emphasized as pervasive through all stages of development: developing basic skills, acquiring knowledge, and establishing personal values. Three program levels are outlined for children 4 and 5 years old, 6, 7, and 8 years old, and 9, 10, and 11 years old. The program goal for each level is identified, and the general characteristics of children in this age group are described. Specific curriculum and classroom activities suitable to each age group and the attainment of human goals are presented in narrative form. (JD)
