Competency Based Curriculum Development for Rural Secondary Schools in Alaska: A User's Guide.
Evenson, Patricia O.
The result of 18 months' work, this guide to developing and implementing a competency based curriculum for Alaska's North Slope Borough School District is designed to provide personnel in other rural Alaskan districts with information, materials, and planning procedures that can be replicated and/or adapted. Each portion of the North Slope project is described in detail and sample materials are presented in the appendices for each task described. Specific recommendations are presented in italics for each portion of the guide. Other Alaskan and Lower 48 resource materials are also cited. Recognizing that Alaskan school districts are currently at many different points in the development of secondary curriculum, an index indicates the various stages of development, where they are discussed in the document, and the supplementary appendix materials. The stages discussed in this document and presented in the index are as follows: define needs for secondary curriculum; define goals and competencies; build a course plan; train teachers; develop planned course statements; design learning materials; define delivery system; design recordkeeping system; plan for evaluation; and make long-range plans. Costs to the North Slope project are detailed, and the appendices provide samples of competency based education components, a list of available competency based secondary curriculum dissemination materials, a sample competency achievement record, a classroom reporting form, and planned course statements for career exploration, health, physical education, skin sewing, communication skills, etc. (JC)
