Adventure Education and Self Concept--An Annotated Bibliography with Appendix.
Matthews, Bruce E.
The introduction to this annotated bibliography analyzes the development of adventure education, describes the search procedure utilized to generate the citations, and makes recommendations regarding the need for a valid, reliable, and accepted instrument to measure self-concept change in adventure programs. Adventure education is defined as "those programs and experiences in which elements of high excitement and controlled risk are inherent". Self concept is defined as "those feelings, attitudes and perceptions about oneself that, as a whole are a large determining force in the direction one's life will follow". Divided into two major sections, this document includes annotated citations which have been screened for relevance to self concept and 150 non-annotated citations listing all the literature retrieved or located on the topic of adventure education excluding the literature listed in the annotated section. The annotated section is divided into 5 subsections as follows: journals, periodicals, and magazines (28 citations); studies, dissertations, and theses (34 citations); books (7 citations); ERIC studies (10 studies from Educational Resources Information Center); and miscellaneous reports, catalogs, papers, etc. (13 citations). Although there are some citations from the 50's, most of the material here was written in the 60's and 70's. (JC)
