Community Development Education: A Field-Based Approach. Final Report.
Zachariadis, C. P.
A project to develop a field-based, competency-based training program for community development practitioners was undertaken in the Central Coast Region of California. Competency objectives were identified from a literature review of community development practice and information obtained from field practitioners and community members. Four dimensions of the training program curriculum concern conceptual understanding, skill development, experiential learning, and reflective considerations on which to base professional actions. The curriculum also addresses career and personal objectives. A model for the adoption and implementation of the curriculum is outlined. Operation of the training program involves eight stages: recruitment and assessment, screening, orientation, apprenticeship, career training, internship, placement, and evaluations. The trainee evaluation process is described and a sample rating scale and rating form are included. An overview and evaluation of the implementation of the project are presented. Appendices include a curriculum outline, learning module schematic, selection committee evaluation form analysis, and information about workshops. (SW)
