Occupations and organizations within the British press and broadcasting systems are examined in this paper. Its sections summarize recent British research on media communicators and discuss characteristics of craft unions and other media organizations; the historical development of the British press; the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and Independent Television (ITV) companies; media trade unions; media management; occupational goals and ideologies in the media; the status and job responsibilities of editors, press journalists, and broadcast producers; the role of women and ethnic minorities in the media; entry into media careers; and media career possibilities. Tables are provided to show daily press circulation figures, penetration of national newspapers in selected regions, numbers employed in the newspaper industry and in the BBC, data regarding trade unions, editors' work activities, memberships of national unions, and the proportion of women journalists and editors in the British media.
