Options in Education Transcript: "Junior High Schools," Parts I and II. A Co-Production of National Public Radio and the Institute for Educational Leadership of the George Washington University.
This two-part publication attempts to evaluate junior high school education for young adolescents. It is a transcript of the National Public Radio presentation "Options in Education." The first part reports on a visit to a fairly new, upper middle class junior high school in Austin, Texas. In this transcript, the interviewer talks with the school principal, assistant prinicpals, students and teachers and records observations and dialogue from a band practice, a wood shop, a history class and a lunch period. The second part includes discussions about alternative ways to educate young adolescents; the needs of early adolescents; and middle schools and elementary schools going up through 8th grade. These discussions are held with school superintendents, educators and professionals specializing in the field of early adolescence. Descriptions of some different approaches and special school programs instituted by various public and private schools across the country are included. (RF)
