Coping with Male Mid-Life: A Systematic Analysis Using Literature as a Data Source.

This paper uses twentieth century American fictional literature to examine middle-age male development. Two historical periods, post World War I and post World War II, were chosen to provide a wide data base which could be analyzed over time. With seven American literature professors' aid, works of literary merit with a middle-aged male protagonist were selected. The sample included eight novels and four plays, half from each period. (For example, among those included were: "The Professor's House,""They Knew What They Wanted,""Herzog," and "Death of a Salesman.") Grounded theory, a research methodology which emphasizes theory discovery rather than theory verification, was used to study male mid-life and to uncover new insights. Emerging from the literature review were five major developmental categories and their characteristic properties. Major categories included aging awareness, meaning search, generation squeeze, career malaise, and ego rejuvenation. Comparative data analysis revealed that mid-life coping can be an uncomfortable, sometimes painful, endeavor. New insights discovered were related to what it means to be the middle of three generations, the importance of peer/spouse confirmation of one's aging, and the rejuvenation function of the mentor relationship.
