Women, the Poorer Sex.
Whalen, Maureen
The purpose of this document is to present statistics which show clearly that poverty is a women's issue. The position of poor women relative to the total population living below the Federal poverty line is demonstrated. Income levels are analyzed to reveal the percentages of women whose annual income is below $5,000. The relationship of income level to marital status is examined for both men and women. Income levels are then broken down according to sex, race, and age. The correlation between education and income level is also shown. Data on families living below the poverty line are analyzed in terms of the sex and race of the head of household, and the number of children in the household. The number of people living in poverty is described by region. Finally, in addition to statistics on who received medical benefits under the Medicaid program in 1974, statistical characteristics of individuals who receive Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) are provided, showing age, work experience and education of mother, and ages and number of children per AFDC household.
