Status of the American Public School Teacher, 1975-76.

This report presents data on the status of teachers in the school year l975-76 and on trends from l961 to l976. The sixty-two-item questionnaire used in this survey contains many items that are identical or closely similar to questions asked in one or more previous surveys. Data are analyzed with reference to the following characteristics of respondents: sex, age, school level (elementary-secondary), highest degree, geographic region, and size of school system. Ten chapters cover the following items: (1) (professional preparation: highest degree held, recency of degrees, type of institution; (2) teaching experience: entry into the profession, total years experience, years of teaching in present system, continuity of service, activities last year and next year; (3) teaching assignment: staffing patterns; (4) teaching assignment: pupil load, pupils' economic background, type of community; (5) teaching assignment: weekly work load, class periods (secondary teachers), contract year, lunch periods; (6) professional growth: growth activities, college study for credit, professional organization membership; (7) attitudes toward the profession: reasons for becoming a teacher, willingness to teach again, plans to remain in teaching, satisfactions and problems; (8) economic status: annual contract salary, additional income, total household income, summer employment; (9) personal life: age, racial and ethnic group, family background, sex and marital status, spouses and children, other dependents, home and car ownership, 1975 summer activities; and (10) community and civic life. Appended to this report are a technical note on sampling variation, the survey questionnaire, and tabulation of question responses. (JD)
