Rankins, William H., III; Wilson, David A.
This publication describes in detail projects for using solar energy; five major projects and five mini-projects. The major projects are: (1) Parabolic reflectors, both cylindrical and spherical; (2) Solar oven; (3) Hot water heater; (4) House heating; and (5) Conversion to electricity. Mini-projects investigate: (1) Solar computers; (2) Fresnel lense usage; (3) A solar still; (4) Greenhouses; and (5) Sun tracking. For each major project, an introductory discussion, an explanation of how to design and construct the apparatus, a materials and tools list, and other tips on finding materials, saving money, safety, and project applications are given. Included in the information given for each project are efficiency, usage, and modification information. These projects are written to give the amateur experimentor complete information in designing and constructing solar energy equipment. Running commentaries interspersed throughout the text are: (1) The Finer Art of Scrounging; (2) Solar Facts; and (3) Solar History. (MR)
