Regional Study of Students in the College of Agriculture; 1890 and 1862 Comparisons. A Summary Tabulation Prepared for Deans and Directors of Resident Instruction in Agriculture at Land-Grant Institutions in the Southern Region.

To give deans and directors of agriculture schools and colleges in the southern region of the U.S. an overall view of agriculture students' characteristics, experiences, and attitudes, a 1977 survey of all 1862 and 1890 land grant institutions (plus Texas Tech and Tuskegee Institute) details student background, high school and college experiences, life goals and aspirations, and attitudes (1862 and 1890 refer to different legislative acts creating the land grant system). Today, 1862 schools are the larger, predominately white state institutions, while 1890 ones are smaller, predominantly black agriculture schools. While most agriculture students are from urban areas, parental education is a primary difference in background; percentages who finished high school or college are substantially higher for 1862 parents. Apparently 1890 students receive greater anticipatory socialization to agriculture through high school counselors, courses, and club activities, pick agriculture earlier in their careers, seem more committed to their choice, expect financial rewards, and participate in occupationally related activities. Students at 1862 universities are more likely to want a farm or ranch residence. The majority of all students feel agricultural career opportunities to be good.
