In this document, the problem of defining an alternative school is discussed in terms of the variety among schools and programs calling themselves an alternative. The place of alternatives in the educational system is examined in light of the dissatisfaction of parents, teachers, and students. A state by state listing of public alternative schools/options is provided, in most cases with a brief description of the philosophy of the particular program. Addresses, telephone numbers, grade range, and number of students are stated. State departments' of education policies and procedures concerning educational alternatives and options are surveyed, including information about state legislation. A listing of local school district offices responsible for alternatives includes a variety of models and perspectives on the development and implementation of alternatives/options. In a section on resources, national and regional coalitions and associations are listed together with groups and publications providing support services. Some recent books and reports are also listed, as well as resources supporting parent involvement in schools. Finally, comments from schools and a summary of some key questions, jargon, and concepts often applied to educational alternatives are given. (Author/MC)
