A Handbook on Scheduling the Band: Data Based on Attitudes and Techniques of American School Band Directors and Administrators Surveyed 1974 and 1975. American School Band Directors' Association, Research Committee Reports for the 23rd Annual Convention, Columbus, Ohio, 1975.
American School Band Directors Association, Newark, OH.
The guide, part of a series of committee reports relating to school band performance, organization, and equipment needs, is intended to assist band directors as they develop band music schedules. Major objectives of the handbook are to present attitudes of band directors and administrators toward scheduling and to offer scheduling suggestions. The document is presented in four sections. Sections I and II review band directors' responses to surveys undertaken by the ASBDA in 1974 and 1975 to find out how good schedules are developed. Section III examines responses to a 1975 ASBDA survey to measure administrator attitudes toward band music programs, band directors' requests for flexible scheduling, band students' individual and group needs, and scheduling problems resulting from mixed grade level bands. Generally, supervisors indicated positive attitudes toward band music programs in their schools. Section IV relates 19 band and music education schedules used in junior and senior high schools throughout the United States. For each schedule, information is given on city population, level, staff, band enrollment, school enrollment, length of class, scheduling conflicts, and participation limitations. Included in the report is a list of band directors to contact for additional scheduling information. (Author/DB)
