Children at Risk: A Handbook of the Signs and Symptoms of Early Childhood Difficulties.
Crow, Gary A.
This handbook was designed to help teachers or others working with children from ages 5 through 8 years to recognize and understand children's problems and potential problems. The book identifies 100 symptoms of physical, emotional, moral, social, sexual, and intellectual problems which indicate difficulty in a child's life. Each chapter describes a particular group of problems and includes examples of specific symptoms as well as a discussion of causes, related difficulties, degree of seriousness, and suggestions for the teacher in handling each problem. Symptom profile charts are included at the end of each chapter to help the teacher to identify and to understand the problems of particular children. The topics covered in specific chapters include academic problems, social and moral problems, childhood illnesses, family and environmental factors, vision and hearing problems, withdrawing and fearful behavior, less frequent health problems, and unusual symptoms. The appendices to the book include a list of 450 danger signs from which the 100 symptoms previously discussed were drawn, an early identification index for identifying the problems of individual children, and a first aid guide for teachers.
