Hard Walls--Soft Walls: The Social Ecology of an Urban Desegregated High School.

The work reported here is the result of a two year field study of an urban desegregated high school. Some of the problems of desegregation research, problems of research in familiar settings, and the theoretical background needed for desegregation research are discussed. The physical structure and environment of control at Pawnee West High School and the neighborhood environment are described. The ecological orientations and educational expectations of Pawnee West High School are examined. The social organization of both time and space at the school is described. The problem and consequences of avoidance are discussed. The building of trust in a biracial high school, including the ideological foundations of concern, is examined. (Author/MC)
