Courage, Credibility, and Critics of Education.
Park, J. Charles
Increased grassroots political activity by the far right wing of the political spectrum suggests that American public education may be entering another round of attack from that sector. A review of activities of ultraconservatives and the far right shows that the "New Right" coalition of these groups presents signs of long range planning, political sophistication and the capacity to compromise for maximum effectiveness. It is urged that educators consider the implications for program development should rightist efforts to reduce federal and state funding for educational and social programs succeed. To be effective in countering these efforts, educators will need courage to become involved in public debate, credibility with voters, and knowledge of methods to protect schools from extremist critics.
