Descriptions of the Distributions of ALT Within and Across Classes During the A-B Period. Beginning Teacher Evaluation Study; Technical Note Series. Technical Note IV-1a.
Filby, Nikola N.; Marliave, Richard
This report provides descriptive statistical information from Phase III-B of the Beginning Teacher Evaluation Study. Within the sample of second and fifth grade classrooms in public schools in California, approximately six students were identified as target students to be studied during the school year. These students were observed approximately weekly during the period of October to December and again during the period from January to May. The observers recorded student time within subject matter areas of reading and mathematics, focusing on the content of student instructional tasks, the degree of difficulty of instructional tasks for individual students, and student engagement on those tasks. Academic Learning Time (ALT) is defined as time on tasks of intermediate difficulty for the student directly related to the measures of achievement under study during which a student is engaged in the instructional task.
