Developing Computational Skills: 1978 Yearbook.
Suydam, Marilyn N., Ed.; Reys, Robert E., Ed.
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) 1978 Yearbook contains fourteen articles covering a broad spectrum of computational topics. The first article considers the role of computational skills in the world of today and tomorrow. Several articles focus attention on how to help children master the basic facts. Algorithms for operations with whole and fractional numbers are considered in a number of articles, with suggested instructional sequences and teaching strategies. Assessing instruction to plan for diagnosis and remediation is discussed from three points of view, with specific difficulties pinpointed. The vital need to include estimation and mental arithmetic skills as computational goals is highlighted by an article proposing both specific procedures and guidelines. Embedding computational practice in other mathematical settings is the focus of another article, and finally, ways of using a calculator as a tool in developing mathematical ideas are presented.
