Dhand, H.
The present volume outlines the reasons, facilities, activities, schemata, and suggestions for setting up a functional social studies laboratory in the hope that the quality in social studies education will be improved. Approximately half of the book offers sources of materials for the benefit of teachers. Labs are not only a repository of materials and equipment but also a workshop and a place of learning which fosters various kinds of communicative, creative, organizational, and manipulative skills. Five chapters are: 1) Reasons for having a social studies laboratory; 2) Facilities; 3) Schematic - social studies laboratory, description; 4) A list of activities and methods upon which social studies teachers can draw to promote learning in the social studies lab; and 5) Suggestions for the planning of a social studies laboratory. Seven appendices include lists of Canadian sources and addresses for free social studies materials, representatives of other countries in Canada, magazines and periodicals, addresses of manufacturers and distributors of instructional materials, Canadian publishers, and professional references for social studies teachers.
